When a person thinks of massage, he or she usually envisions a vigorous massage at the gym or a long relaxing session at an expensive spa or salon.
Massage for the elderly takes on a whole new prospective

Massage for the elderly population uses different techniques and time limits . This style of massage has been proven to be effective, increasing health and wellness among its recipients. Because of these factors massage can become a part of a health maintenance regime, not just a one time luxury.

What you will learn:

  • Aspects of aging
  • Benefits, cautions, and contraindications associated with this group
  • Learn a sequence geared to the over 65 population and how to modify the basic positions  used in massage

What to bring:
Please bring sheets, light blanket|
*Massage lotion or cream (oil is not used on the elderly)

About your instructor:
Sue Wood is a PA licensed massage therapist and an AOBTA certified shiatsu practitioner. She is also a graduate of the shiatsu Instructor’s Training Program at the Meridian Shiatsu Institute in Wayne, Pennsylvania. Sue has served in the Wellness industry as both a teacher, department supervisor , and advisory board member in massage programs in Philadelphia and the surrounding region. Sue has maintained her private practice since 1998.  Her clientele include the elderly, individuals diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, and clients affected by migraines, TMJ, back pain and hormonal imbalances. She is currently working with the HIV positive community at Siloam Wellness Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
