Workshop Description:
Medical Massage is outcome-based massage with the specific intention of facilitating healing and/ or symptom relief in clients with one or more diagnosed medical conditions. Medical Massage practitioners have an advanced understanding of anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology and can adapt a variety of techniques to skillfully and cautiously alleviate symptoms related to their client’s individual condition(s).

  • Medical Massage opportunities
  • A review of common massage techniques and their specific effects on the body’s individual systems
  • Foundations of Medical Massage
  • Body mechanics when working in a hospital and/or home-care setting
  • Body systems and common pathologies: 2-3 of the most common pathologies will be discussed as examples of how to apply the decision tree approach to planning and executing a medical massage treatment session
  • Anatomy and physiology of each body system will be reviewed and the effects of common massage techniques on the individual systems will be discussed in detail.

Beth Villante, BSN, RN, CHPN, LMT
Beth is s a practicing Certified Hospice and Pallative Care Registered Nurse for Main Line Health Homecare and Hospice.  Beth is the After Hours RN serving patients and families with critical needs.  Beth is an Integrative RN with nearly 20 years of experience in the field of Integrative and Complementary medicine.  Beth has developed and taught Touch Therapies an experiential class for health care providers to learn how to integrate touch/massage and energy work into their practices and self-care routines.  Beth also co-teaches a Heal Thy Self class for nurses and other health care providers in the Main Line Health (MLH) network.  Beth participates on 3 committees at MLH with the goal of inspiring the health system to recognize the role massage therapy plays in healing and health promotion.  Those committees include: Hospice Unit Council, Health Work Environment Committee and QAPI- Quality Assurance Process Improvement. Beth integrates the wisdom of Evidence Based Practice (EBP), research and the medical model to demonstrate the benefits of massage in the ever changing field of healthcare.

Beth’s career in massage and integrative medicine began when she graduated from The Pennsylvania School of Muscle Therapy in 1999.  She founded the South Street Healing Center in November of 1999 where she worked side by side with her mentor Dr. Paul Brown Bodhise a naturopathic chiropractor and creator of the Bodhise Method of Neuromuscular Therapy. In 2001 Beth studied Oncology Massage with Gayle MacDonald MS, LMT one of the pioneers in the field and author of Medicine Hands: Massage Therapy for People With Cancer. In 2000, she joined the team at the Myrna Brind Center of Integrative Medicine at Jefferson Hospital practicing clinical massage in a hospital setting.  Beth specializes in Neuromuscular Therapies, Myofascial, Swedish, Pfrimmer, Sports, Perinatal, Oncology and Geriatric and Hospice massage modalities.  In 2011 Beth graduated with her BSN from Chamberlain College of Nursing and taught Massage Therapy and all related science course work at the National Massage Therapy Institute.
