Footrests can be an important factor in reducing the pain of sitting.  Ideally, your knees and hips should be at about the same height (your thighs should be parallel to the floor).  This can be tough to achieve as most desktops and workstations are simply too high for ergonomically correct use.  Generally, if you cant lower your desktop or work surface, and the only option is to raise your seat, then you should be raising your feet a similar amount.
